It's (Firefox) certainly the most successful open source project to date at getting visible to people who have no clue what open source is (and probably still don't). It's certainly done a lot for getting open standards back on the playing field in the browser space.

It's changed over time in the sense that now Mozilla finally has the resources to be its own independent entity and so it can really hire a lot of these volunteers and actually pay them, which is obviously a great thing for the community. But we still have hundreds of thousands of volunteers, so it's a very strong community.
